Young get online carbon calculator

10 January 2008

A new online carbon calculator has been launched to help educate young people about climate change.

With consumer electronics expected to account for nearly half of all domestic energy use by 2020, techno-savvy young people are being urged to switch off gadgets and chargers to cut their carbon footprint.

MTV has launched the ‘i-Trod’, an online calculator.

David Lynn, executive vice president and managing director of MTV Networks UK and Ireland: "We've created the online calculator, which will be hosted on www.mtv.co.uk but also available through an embed for websites or weblogs.

"The calculator provides a carbon footprint for each user based on their daily activities and habits - from gaming to mobile phone usage and gives useful suggestions on how to shrink it."

Emissions from left-idle entertainment consoles and TVs contribute around three million tonnes of CO2 a year, according to estimates.

Meanwhile, Repak has launched the first public online carbon calculator in Ireland.
