Brits plan green new year

British people are expected to swap traditional abstinence pledges in the new year for greener lifestyles policies, according to new research.

Friends Provident said that almost 13 million people in the UK will make new year's resolutions with a green hue in 2008.

A quarter of the respondents said that they will make green resolutions such as turning electrical appliances off when not in use, recycling more and using eco-products such as energy-saving appliances and light bulbs.

Those in their 30s held the strongest desire to be greener, with almost a third planning to make green pledges.

The survey also found that Brits were keen to give younger generations advice on how to lead greener lifestyles such as walking more.

Julia Dreblow, socially responsible investment marketing manager at Friends Provident, said: "Without a doubt green issues will be on Brits' minds more than ever in 2008, many of which have new year's resolutions to live greener lives, ranging from being more environmentally-friendly in their homes to being more ethically minded when they shop."
