SCLC scheme wins corporate backing
A new scheme helps firms to standardise assessments of greenhouse gas emissions throughout their supply chains.
As part of the Supply Chain Leadership Collaboration (SCLC), run by the UK-based Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), firms such as Cadbury Schweppes, Dell, Nestle, PepsiCo, Proctor & Gamble and Tesco are working to together to cut supply chain waste in a bid to improve their carbon footprint.
"Multinationals are seeking to understand where the emissions are lying in their supply chain and what risks and opportunities from climate change will be presented," Paul Simpson, CDP chief operating officer, told press agencies.
Each organisation has selected 50 suppliers to work with as part of the pilot scheme, after which time the CDP will publish a report.
The second phase starts in May 2008 and may include up to 2,000 suppliers from each participating group.
Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said: "Tesco is one of the founding partners in the new CDP initiative for the supply chain.
"It has a simple aim: to bring together major retailers and key brands so that we can understand, report and reduce carbon emissions within the supply chain."
