Green light expected for nuclear power

The UK is expected to approve a new generation of nuclear power stations within the next week, Reuters has reported.

Although analysts are calling the plans "a necessary evil", it is thought that next week's announcement will be challenged by environmental campaigners including Greenpeace, which claims that the decision may be "unlawful".

However, as renewable energy generation techniques are still being perfected, some say that an upgraded nuclear energy programme may help the government meet its carbon dioxide emissions targets by 2020, especially if the new plants are open by 2017.

Approval for the new power stations is expected to be announced on Tuesday alongside the publication of the Energy Bill, which will combine with the Planning Bill and the Climate Change Bill to comprise the government's climate change and energy policy for the coming years.

According to the Register, the new nuclear stations may help to address the problem of British dependence on imported fuel.
